Over the years SATUCC has worked on trade agreements in the region and how they impact workers, decent work and the labour market of the SADC region. Work, which includes work on EU-Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and Migration, have seen the regional trade union body being more proactive rather than reactive. It is in the same spirit of being proactive that SATUCC would like to work on the impacts of AfCFTA on decent work, labour migration and employment creation at the SADC region level.
The scope of research work included, the following:

– Determine the extent to which labour provisions are provided for in the AfCFTA and how they can strengthen the framework conditions for decent work;
– Assess the provisions of involvement of trade unions in the implementation of the AfCFTA and identify the main entry points; and,
– Identify and where possible quantify risks with regard to job destruction, worker replacement, off-shoring or other adverse labour market effects that may be caused by the AfCFTA implementation.
